Vehicle Crime in this area

Alert message sent 09/09/2021 13:50:00

Information sent on behalf of West Yorkshire Police

In the early hours of Wednesday 8th September a BMW vehicle was stolen from the City Fields estate in Wakefield. The vehicle was of the keyless type and it is believed at this stage that this was stolen via what we understand as 'Relay Theft'.

This is where criminals use devices to 'relay' a signal from the car to the key which is often inside the owners address. The signal is used to open and start the car.

Police are investigating this incident but as a word of advice if you have a similar 'keyless' vehicle please ensure that you keep the key in an 'RFID' or Faraday pouch. These stop signals from being emitted. Other prevention measures are also encouraged such as steering locks etc.

If you see anything suspicious please report it. Likewise if you own CCTV please check your systems between 1.40am and 2am.
