Home security advice
* Do you have high hedges to the front or back of your property? This may prevent someone from being seen if they are attempting to get into your home. Front boundaries should not exceed 1 meter in height, side or rear boundaries should not exceed 1.8 meters.
* Have you got euro-cylinder locks on your doors? If yes, do they meet the very latest standards of TS007 (3 star rating) or SS312 (Sold Secure Diamond Standard).
* Have you considered fitting sash jammers to vulnerable doors and windows?
* Are valuable items on show from your window? Consider what can be seen from outside.
* Do you leave your doors/windows unlocked in any of the following situations?
1. Just got home from work
2. Doing a bit of gardening
3. Going to the local shop – only going to be 5 minutes Your home is only secure when your doors and windows are locked.
* Think about where you keep your car keys at home? Are they on show? Are they within reach of the letterbox?
* Consider leaving a light on a timer in the evening when no one is home to make your home look occupied. You can even purchase a fake LED TV simulator that flickers random lights, giving the impression that the TV is on - ideal for bedrooms.
* Secure tools, ladders and other implements to remove the means of committing a crime.
* If you have a shed, make sure your shed door, door frame and walls are solid. Consider integrating your shed into your home alarm system, especially if valuables are stored.
* Be proactive. Consider setting up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme on your street.
