Dear Resident, We want to make you aware of a recent spate of burglaries in Ossett with a number of them being committed in and around the Central Ossett area, specifically Athold St, Towngate, Tumbling Close and Broadowler Lane, as well as Watson Avenue.
Between 13th – 15th January, six residential properties were targeted and entry was attempted or gained by snapping the door locks or smashing a rear ground floor window.
Investigations are currently ongoing to try and identify those responsible and we will be increasing our patrols with extra officers being deployed to the area.
You can help us by checking your CCTV / doorbell cameras and if you notice anything suspicious, please get in touch.
What can you do to protect yourself and your property?
Cylinder locks are present on the majority of UPVC and composite doors and we are aware that some offenders have developed a way of overcoming them to then gain access into a home. Check the standard of lock or euro profile cylinder within your door. Look to upgrade your locks to one’s that have either achieved a 3-star rating under TS 007 and/or the Sold Secure Diamond Standard (SS312). Some cylinders have achieved both.
The term “Anti snap” or “Snap Safe” locks are those that are tested and approved to SS312 Diamond standard.
Cylinder locks can be changed by yourself. However, it is vital that they are measured properly to ensure the right size for your door. They should NOT be fitted so that they are left protruding from the door unit or handle.
Think about adding sash jammers to your door - They provide extra security to a door. They are made of steel and are an easy-to-use additional security aid to the door frame.
